Be it known that I, AMANDUs M. KRUEGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bellville, in the county of Austin and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Musical Instrument, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to stringed musical instruments of the lyre type; and its object is to provide a new and. improved musical instrument which is simple and durable in construction, very light, of high resonant qualities, and arranged to permit convenient manipulation of the strings without the player touching the soundboard with the fingers.

The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in. the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a face view of the improvement, parts being in section. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, andFig. 3 .is an enlarged sectional plan view of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

, The hollow bodyA of the instrument is pref erably made flat and slightly tapered at the back, and the'said body is provided with integral hollow side arms B B, curved. to give the instrument a lyre shape, the upper ends of the said side arms being connected with each other by a hollow arched cross-bar C, the terminals D of the said side arms being in the form of suitable solid ornaments to enhance the appearance of the instrument and to protect the same against injury. The upper end of the body A is reinforced at the inside by a block A, connected with a hollow neck E, carrying frets F and terminating in a hollow head Gr, connected with the cross-bar C and in communication therewith, so that the interior of the bodyAis connected, by way of the neck E and head G, with the crossbar C, and the latter is connected at its ends with the hollow side arms B, in communication with the interior of the body A.

The head G is provided with the usual tuning-pins H, engaged by strings I, extending over the frets F and the body A and over a bridge J to connect with a tailpiece K, secured to the lower end of the body A opposite a reinforcing-block A A hand-rest L is also secured to the lower end of the body A. A sound-hole A is formed in the front of the body A between the bridge J and the block A, and the front and back of the body A are reinforced by transverse braces A.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the several main parts of the instrument are made hollow, and the parts are in communication with each other, so as to render the in strument highly resonant and insuring a good quality of tone. It will also be seen that by the arrangement described the parts are not liable to warp, as they are rigidly connected with each other, and consequently long life of the instrument is insured.

I do not limit myself to the particular construction shown and described, as the same 'may be varied without deviating from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A stringed musical instrument provided with a lyre-shaped hollow body having hollow side arms, and a hollow cross-bar connecting the ends of the side arms of the body with each other and communicating with the interior thereof.

2. A stringed musical instrument provided with a lyre-shaped hollow body having a hollow cross-bar connecting the ends of the side arms of the body with each other communicating with the interior of said side arms and a hollow neck and head connecting the body with the said cross-bar.

3. A stringed musical instrument comprising a body having hollow side arms and a hollow cross-bar connecting the side arms with each other and communicating with the interior of said side arms a hollow neck extending from the upper end of the body and in communication therewith, and a hollow head on the said neck, connected with the said cross-bar and in communication with the interior thereof.

4. A stringed musical instrument comprising a body having hollow side arms and a hollow cross-bar connecting the side arms with each other and in communication with the interior thereof a hollow neck extending from the upper end of the body and in communication therewith, a hollow head on the said neck, connected with the said cross-bar and establishing communication between the interior of the neck and the cross-bar and solid ornaments on the free ends of the side arms.
